Overview
“One of the most beautiful valleys” — the words of Tilman, the English mountaineer and explorer who climbed the world's highest peaks up to 1950 for the British national geographic society. Lang-tang should really be pronounced Lang-dang, meaning to sleep with legs separated; for the Tamang and Tibetan people it is a sacred valley with its own myth of how they came to settle here. Less touristic and close to Kathmandu, it makes a fine introduction to the Himalaya: from low country to snowy peaks, easy to difficult, the valley cut by a raging river offers beautiful landscapes, high Himalayan ranges, alpine terrain and rainforest, with wild animals and birds to watch for. Mornings begin with smoke rising from stone-roofed houses against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. You need no climbing experience, yet still reach 4,760m at Kyanjin Ri — or 4,980m at Tcherko-Ri — for 360° mountain views.
