The altitude is the real challenge here, not the terrain, so every itinerary is built around acclimatisation days rather than treating them as optional.
Nepal's busiest and most versatile trekking region, and the one absorbing most of the country's growth in visitors. Routes range from a short walk to the Poon Hill sunrise to the sixteen-day Circuit over the Thorong La at 5,416m. Subtropical farmland, rhododendron forest, Gurung villages, hot springs and high desert, often within one trek.
The closest Himalayan valley to Kathmandu. You drive in rather than gambling on a mountain flight, and you're among 6,000m and 7,000m peaks within a few days. Tamang and Tibetan culture, the Langtang Lirung glacier, and a viewpoint above Kyanjin Gompa that needs no climbing experience.
A former Tibetan kingdom in the rain shadow behind the Annapurnas: eroded cliffs cut with sky-caves, cliff monasteries, and the walled medieval city of Lo Manthang. The one region in Nepal that is better in summer, because the monsoon that soaks everywhere else largely misses it.
A restricted area under the world's eighth-highest mountain, which is exactly what has kept it quiet. Permits are issued only through registered agencies, so you get a full circuit and a 5,130m pass at the Larkya La alongside a fraction of the foot traffic of Annapurna or Everest.
